Team Rocket outfits one of the two starters they provide to new grunts with a chip that boosts aggression and loyalty to the organization. To all appearances, he's a perfect fit for the job. Serious, grumpy, gruff, stoic, driven... but when he thinks that nobody is watching, Nemean acts like any other cat. He freaks out over sunbeams, bats at fabric, flips over literally nothing—if you've seen your housecat do something dumb, chances are that Nemean has probably done it as well. Even after he evolved into a Luxray and grew insanely large, he continues to engage in ridiculous antics, but is now even more arrogant than ever before. Despite everything, though, he truly cares for his trainer, and will go to ground to defend Connie.

While biking down Route 8, Connie's peaceful wanderings were interrupted by getting whacked on the head by a stick. Wielded by a tiny, adorable Ralts. Who refused to stop whacking Connie's shins until she sent out Naga to fight. As the Ralts refused to actually use any of their moves in favor of striking Naga with the stick (with surprisingly good sword technique), the battle went in Naga's favor... until the Ralts evolved from the stress, becoming a Kirlia. Who still refused to use their moves. Regardless, as thanks for providing a good enough fight to get them to evolve, the Kirlia allowed Connie to catch them. Artemis is a spunky little firebrand of a Pokémon, constantly challenging Connie's other companions to sparring matches (except Amy, of course, nobody fights with Amy). After spending her winnings from the Steel Double Battle Challenge, Connie purchased a Dawn Stone and used it to evolve Artemis into a gallant Gallade, granting their wish. Artemis hugged her for ten straight minutes afterwards. Although still training-oriented, Artemis is now far more confident and almost flirty with the female members of the team, constantly joking around and ribbing them. (They also got a copy of Rock-type Butch Blues from somewhere, who knows where.) Artemis is still extremely sweet and cuddly, though.

How did a Honedge embed itself in a rock just outside Lavender City? When did it do it? Could any old schmuck have pulled it out, or was it waiting for somebody worthy? The answers to these questions will never be known, because Connie just yanked the thing right out and had a sparring match with it before Krookodile Bonbee could test his hypothesis. Whoops. Regardless, Connie now has a jolly sword who likes messing with her other Pokémon like a doting grandmother, spars with Artemis constantly, and prefers to stay in her sheath rather than her Pokéball THANKYOUVERYMUCH. At least Chandrahas a good sparring partner, and respects Connie enough to allow her to wield her.

Connie found a Scyther on Route 15 idly cutting berries into perfect, symmetrical slices while leaning against a tree. So of course Connie had to catch it. After a pitched battle, she caught the Scyther and had something of a power struggle with Cú over the course over the next few days. She refused to listen to Connie's instructions, choosing to follow her instincts in battle—which, granted, were pretty decent. But she was still absolutely insufferable, loved showing up Connie by showing off to everybody else, and preened constantly. Then Connie discovered her secretly playing with Artemis and Amaterasu, actually smiling as she indulged them and told them stories in Pokéspeak. Connie joined in, even having an exhibition match with Cú, and the two reconciled. After Cú was traded as part of a scheme to nab the rest of Connie's Rocket infiltration team, she evolved into a Scizor. While somewhat bitter about her loss of speed, the defensive capabilities and extra attack more than makes up for it. (Plus, now she's literally a knight in shining armor.)
Due to a stroke of extraordinary luck while exploring Goldenrod City on the way to the Magnet Rail, Connie encountered a Dratini curled up in the shadows of an alleyway. When she approached to check whether the Pokémon was okay, the Dratini launched a Twister directly at Connie's face. Once Connie managed to calm the Dratini down, she carefully removed the Games Corner tag affixed to her fin, earning the small dragon's loyalty. And so the Dratini allowed herself to be captured. Naga was a candidate for being a Games Corner prize, but was too prideful and angry to allow herself to be treated as some kind of commodity—and so she escaped. Naga rushes headlong into bad situations and picks fights with anyone, anytime, anywhere; she gets into trouble very easily, and will often go against her trainer's wishes if she believes that she knows better. However, she begrudgingly trusts and respects Connie, and will put herself at risk to protect her. She hates being inside a Pokéball, and often lazes about the caravan or whatever else Connie is taking as transportation now that she's too large to fit around Connie's arm.

After Steven went back to Earth, Connie was left with one of the smallest, weakest Pokémon in his box: a Dreepy by the name of Dreepers Peepers. To help the poor thing's confidence, Connie gave him a more intimidating name—Jormungandr—and began training the Dreepy to match the fearsome reputation of his namesake. She was genuinely surprised to see her efforts rewarded when Jormungandr eventually evolved into the pseudo-legendary Dragapult, and more than a little delighted too. Jormungandr is stubborn to a fault, never giving up in the face of adversity to make his trainer proud... which is something that backfired on him multiple times. Still, Jormungandr hasn't shed all of Steven's silliness, and can be something of a slacker while he's playing with the other mons in the party.
